History

Designed to replicate its name sake, Buckskin Joe is a town right out of the 1860’s Colorado Frontier.  Overgrown remnants are all that remain of the original town, located approximately 2 miles from Alma, Colorado and about 8 miles from Fairplay, except the cemetery.  Luckily, the builders of Buckskin Joe saved the only salvageable building and one of the main buildings within the original town, the HAW Tabor Store, from ruin.

All of the buildings are authentic buildings from the mid to late 1800 Colorado frontier.  Each building was meticulously taken apart and marked piece by piece and reassembled in the current location.  Joseph Higgenbottom, who was known for his eccentricity and Buckskin clothing he wore discovered the  'Buckskin Joe Diggings' in 1859.  Thus the common name of the boomtown formed around the area was Buckskin Joe.
